What is lipoedema?

Lipoedema is a chronic fat distribution disorder, which is characterised by a disproportionate increase in fatty tissue on the legs, hips and arms. These fat deposits are often accompanied by pain, a slight susceptibility to haematomas and a feeling of heaviness. The fat deposits caused by the disease cannot be reduced by dieting.

Liposuction procedure

Liposuction is a structured process that is tailored to your individual needs.

Counselling & treatment planning

The first step is a comprehensive consultation with our plastic surgery specialists, Markus Klöppel, Benedict Kunz and Ludger Meyer, during which you will be informed about the latest developments in the field of plastic surgery:

  • Discuss your complaints and medical history
  • Carry out a detailed examination of the body
  • Precisely define the zones to be treated
  • Set realistic goals for fat reduction
  • Select the treatment method that is best for you
  • Explain the facts about the healing process

At this appointment, photographic documentation is also prepared as a starting point and the optimum time for the procedure is discussed.

Performance & forms of anaesthesia

Depending on the extent, liposuction is performed in our clinic under Local anaesthesia, in twilight sleep or under general anaesthesia carried out. The following variants are available.

  • Tumescent technique: Before the actual liposuction procedure, a special fluid is injected into the fatty tissue, which causes the tissue to swell, constricts blood vessels and causes a local anaesthetic.
  • Vibration-assisted liposuction: The fine vibrations of the suction cannula gently loosen and precisely remove the fat. This modern technology enables particularly even results when shaping the silhouette.
  • Water-jet assisted liposuction: With this particularly tissue-friendly method, the fat is dissolved with a fine jet of water and suctioned off at the same time.

The method chosen depends on the areas of the body to be treated, the amount of fat to be removed and your individual anatomical conditions. Special cannulas are inserted through tiny incisions to remove the fat tissue in a targeted manner.

Our surgeons pay particular attention to the following Uniform suction for a harmonious appearance.
For minor procedures, you can go home on the same day; for extensive treatments, a stay of one to two nights in our clinic is recommended.

Healing process & results

After the procedure you will wear about four to six weeks Special compression garments that support the healing process through compression and ensure an optimal result:

  • Slight swelling and bruising are normal in the first few days and will gradually disappear
  • After one to two weeks, you can usually resume your daily activities
  • Sport should be avoided for about three to four weeks
  • The final results of liposuction develop over a period of three to six months

During the entire healing phase, we will be at your side with regular follow-up appointments and will accompany you until the final result is achieved. The fat cells removed by liposuction do not form again - with a stable, healthy diet and regular exercise, the result is therefore permanent.

Frequently asked questions about liposuction

Which areas of the body can be treated?

Liposuction is suitable for various areas of the body where the fat deposits typical of lipoedema often form:

  • Hip
  • Thigh
  • Upper arms

When treating several areas, attention is paid to harmonising the overall proportions of the body. In some cases, a combination with other aesthetic surgery procedures can be useful in order to achieve an optimal overall result.

How permanent are the results of liposuction?

The fat cells removed by liposuction do not regrow. If the patient maintains the same weight and a healthy lifestyle, the result is therefore permanent. However, significant weight gain after the operation can cause the remaining fat cells to enlarge. A balanced diet and regular exercise support the long-term success of the treatment

Is liposuction painful?

You will not feel any pain during the procedure thanks to the anaesthetic. Moderate pain is to be expected after the operation, which can be easily treated with medication. The intensity of the pain depends on the extent of the procedure and your individual perception of pain. Most patients report well-tolerated discomfort, which subsides significantly after a few days.

Are there visible scars after liposuction?

The incisions required for liposuction are only a few millimetres in size and are placed in inconspicuous areas. After complete healing, the scars are usually barely visible and are not noticed by those around you. Special scar care products can also support the healing process.

Can liposuction be performed on everyone?

Not every woman affected by lipoedema is suitable for liposuction. Important prerequisites are a largely normal body weight, good skin quality with sufficient elasticity and a good general state of health. Liposuction may be contraindicated in severely overweight people, during pregnancy or with certain pre-existing conditions. Our surgeons will assess your individual suitability for the procedure in a detailed consultation.
