Your body has done a tremendous job - but now you realise that nothing is the same as before. Your arm swells, you are constantly exhausted, even going to the supermarket is exhausting. Perhaps you are afraid that you will never be able to work again. Or you wonder whether you will ever be able to lift your children again. You will receive the following from the doctor who carried out your primary treatment <strong>(Surgeon or chemotherapist) <\/strong>a follow-up calendar, which serves to document all follow-up examinations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Follow-up examinations are scheduled both with your own gynaecologist and with the experts at our Breast Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"gb-text\">Physical examination in breast cancer aftercare<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At each follow-up examination by your gynaecologist, he or she will carry out a physical examination, paying particular attention to symptoms that could indicate a recurrence of the tumour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What is being analysed:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Both sides of the breast or the chest wall after mastectomy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scars on changes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lymph nodes in the armpit and collarbone region<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your general state of health<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the physical examination, you will also talk about your general state of health, your physical performance, any abnormalities, complaints and physical changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"gb-text\">Imaging procedures: Mammography and ultrasound<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Mammography and ultrasound are key examinations in aftercare. These are carried out at regular intervals by the radiologists at our breast centre. How often they are carried out depends on your individual risk. <strong>Detailed information on frequency can be found in our FAQ at the bottom of this page.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"gb-text\" id=\"metastasen\">Detecting metastases early - why follow-up care saves lives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A key aim of regular follow-up care is to detect metastases at an early stage. Metastases occur when cancer cells spread from the original tumour to other organs. In the case of breast cancer, bones, lungs, liver or brain can be affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You should always take these symptoms seriously:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Persistent bone pain with no recognisable cause<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Breathing problems or persistent cough<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unusual exhaustion that doesn't get better<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Neurological abnormalities such as severe headaches or dizziness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Important: Contact your doctor immediately in the event of such complaints, even between regular follow-up appointments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"gb-text\" id=\"wie-oft-nachsorge\">Close monitoring during breast cancer aftercare: How often do aftercare examinations take place?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The frequency depends on your individual risk profile and the time after the initial treatment:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Year 1-3:<\/strong> Quarterly examinations (every 3 months)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Year 4-5:<\/strong> Semi-annual examinations (every 6 months)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>From year 6:<\/strong> Annual examinations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These intervals can be adjusted if necessary if complaints or anxiety arise. The risk of recurrence is highest in the first five years and decreases thereafter. Many patients are considered cured after five to ten years without a relapse - depending on the type of tumour and risk factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"gb-text\">Is blood taken during breast cancer follow-up care?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Routine blood tests (e.g. tumour markers) are not recommended in guideline-based follow-up care, as they do not provide any demonstrable benefit for the early detection of recurrences. Blood tests are only carried out for<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Concrete complaints or symptoms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Monitoring of long-term therapy (e.g. liver values under anti-hormone therapy)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Suspicion of metastases<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"gb-text\">How often is mammography performed after breast cancer?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Mammography is usually carried out once a year, often in the first year after the operation to check the breast after surgery. If there is an increased risk or the findings are unclear, mammography may also be necessary more frequently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"gb-text\"><br>How often is ultrasound used in breast cancer aftercare?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Breast ultrasound complements mammography and is used depending on the individual risk and condition. In the case of dense breast tissue or to clarify abnormal findings, ultrasound is also performed. The frequency is determined on an individual basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"gb-text\"><br>When do most recurrences occur after breast cancer?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>The risk of relapse in the first few <strong>2 to 5 years<\/strong> is highest after treatment. Approximately 80% of all recurrences occur within the first <strong>5 years<\/strong> on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><strong>Important to know:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the case of hormone receptor-positive tumours, recurrences can also occur after 5-10 years<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In triple-negative breast cancer, the risk is particularly high in the first 3 years<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After 10 years without a relapse, the risk decreases significantly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why close monitoring is so important in the first few years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"gb-text\"><br>How quickly can a recurrence develop?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><strong>A recurrence can theoretically occur at any time, but:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Early recurrences<\/strong> (within 2 years) are more frequent in aggressive tumour forms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Late recurrences<\/strong> (after 5-10 years) occur mainly in hormone receptor-positive tumours<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most recurrences occur within the first <strong>3-5 years<\/strong> discovered<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Close follow-up care serves to recognise recurrences as early as possible if they are still easily treatable.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"gb-text\">Which breast cancer is most likely to recur?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The risk of recurrence depends on various factors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Higher risk of relapse with:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Triple-negative breast cancer<\/strong> (lack of hormone and HER2 receptors) - especially in the first 3 years<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>HER2-positive breast cancer<\/strong> without antibody therapy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Large tumours (over 2 cm)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Infestation of several lymph nodes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unfavourable tumour characteristics (high grading value)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Lower risk of relapse with:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hormone receptor-positive tumours with anti-hormone therapy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Small tumours without lymph node involvement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Early stages (stage I)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"gb-text\">When do metastases frequently occur after breast cancer?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"gb-text\"><br><strong>Metastases (distant metastases) can occur at any time, but:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The risk is highest in the first 2-5 years<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Approximately 90% of metastases are detected within the first 10 years<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Late metastases (after 10+ years) are rare, but possible<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"gb-text\">Is a bone scintigram always performed for breast cancer?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>No, a bone scintigram is not routinely performed. This examination is mainly used if symptoms indicate bone metastases (e.g. persistent bone pain) or if the risk profile requires a more detailed examination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"gb-text\">What is done in the DMP breast cancer programme?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>The Disease Management Programme (DMP) for breast cancer is a structured treatment programme run by the health insurance companies.
