Reasons for a breast reduction
Breasts that are disproportionately large in relation to the body as a whole can lead to numerous health problems. Many women suffer for years before deciding to have a breast reduction. Medical reasons for a breast reduction include
- Chronic back and shoulder pain due to the heavy weight of the chest
- Postural damage to the spine and permanent tension
- Cutting bra straps with pressure points on the shoulder
- Skin irritation and inflammation in the inframammary fold
- Restrictions on physical activity and sport
- Difficulties in choosing clothes due to breast size
- Psychological stress due to unwanted attention
These problems are particularly common after pregnancy, with hormonal changes or with increasing age. In these cases, a breast reduction can not only alleviate the physical discomfort but also contribute to a new body image.
In a detailed consultation, our surgeons will clarify with you whether a breast reduction makes sense in your individual case and which procedure is best suited to your wishes.

The breast reduction procedure
The path to a breast reduction at our clinic is a structured process in which your safety and well-being take centre stage.
Personal consultation & examination
It all starts with a detailed consultation with our breast surgery experts. In the process:
- Discuss your individual wishes and expectations in detail
- Carry out a thorough examination of your breasts
- Create a preview of the possible result with the help of a 3D simulation
- Explain the different surgical techniques and their advantages and disadvantages
- Inform them about possible risks and the expected healing process
- Answer all your questions about the operation and aftercare
If medically indicated, we will also support you in applying for cost coverage from your health insurance company and provide the necessary documentation.
Surgical techniques & anaesthesia
Breast reduction is performed in our clinic under general anaesthetic and usually takes two to three hours. Depending on the initial situation and the desired result, we use one of the following proven techniques:
- T-cut technique: The classic method for medium to severe reductions with good shaping
- Vertical technology: With reduced scarring, suitable for light to medium reductions
- Hall-Findlay method: A modern variant with improved durability of the result and a natural shape
In all procedures, excess breast tissue is removed, the skin is tightened and the nipple is repositioned to achieve a harmonious, natural appearance in the right proportion to the body. Our surgeons pay particular attention to maintaining the sensitivity of the nipple and preserving the ability to breastfeed wherever possible.
Our experienced anaesthesia team ensures a safe and well-tolerated anaesthetic that is individually tailored to your needs.
Healing phase & aftercare
After the operation, you will usually stay in hospital for one to two nights under medical observation. We will monitor you closely during the healing phase:
- Checking the wound healing and removing the stitches after ten to 14 days
- Supply with special compression bras or support bras for the healing phase
- Regular follow-up appointments to monitor the healing process
- Detailed advice on rules of behaviour during the recovery period
- Customised scar treatment for an optimal cosmetic result
Most patients can resume light activities after about two weeks. Sport should be avoided for six to eight weeks. The final result of the breast reduction is achieved after around six to twelve months, when the tissue has completely settled and the scars have faded.
Before and after examples
Our surgeons Marc Englbrecht and Moritz Schoeneich can show you discreet before and after photos of former patients in their practice during your consultation. Of course, only if these patients have consented to the use of their photos as illustrative material. These pictures will give you a realistic impression of the results that can be achieved with a breast reduction. Every breast is unique, so your individual result will of course depend on your initial situation and your anatomical conditions.
Combined interventions
In many cases, a breast reduction can be combined with a breast lift to achieve an optimal aesthetic result. The reduction reduces the weight and volume of the mammary gland, while the lift ensures a beautiful shape and position of the breasts.
For patients who suffer from severe asymmetry, we can use various techniques to reduce the size of one side of the breast and, if necessary, enlarge the other side in order to achieve a harmonious overall appearance.
Frequently asked questions about breast reduction
How painful is a breast reduction?
The operation itself is performed under general anaesthetic and is therefore pain-free. Pain may occur in the first few days after the procedure, but this can be easily controlled with medication. Most patients report a feeling of tightness and mild to moderate pain for a few days.
When can I do sport again?
Light physical activity can be resumed after around two to three weeks. However, you should wait six to eight weeks before engaging in intensive sport so as not to jeopardise wound healing. Particular care should be taken with sports that put a lot of strain on the breast. We will advise you individually as to when and how you can resume your sporting activities.
Will visible scars remain?
Every operation leaves scars. With a breast reduction, these typically run around the nipple, vertically downwards and often horizontally in the inframammary fold (T incision). Thanks to modern surgical techniques and careful aftercare, the scars fade over time and become less noticeable.
Can I breastfeed after a breast reduction?
Most modern breast reduction techniques attempt to preserve the milk ducts in order to maintain the ability to breastfeed later on. However, no guarantee can be given, as restrictions are possible depending on the extent of the reduction and individual anatomy. If you are planning to have children and breastfeed in the future, you should definitely discuss this during your consultation.
