The birth of your child is one of the most important experiences in the life of a mother - and an entire family. At the Dr Geisenhofer Women's Clinic in Munich, we accompany you from registration for the birth to discharge with experience, security and the full spectrum of modern obstetrics.
At our clinic, you can give birth with an attending physician or with the clinic's medical team. Regardless of how you decide: Our attending midwives and the specialist doctors on duty are on site around the clock to attend your birth.
Delivery with attending physician
What is an attending physician?
An attending physician is a gynaecologist in private practice who is not employed by the hospital, but cares for their own patients during childbirth. The attending doctor accompanies expectant mothers throughout their pregnancy and is personally present at the birth - a trusted contact person for all questions relating to birth preparation and delivery. However, it is also possible to stay with the previous gynaecologist during the pregnancy and only be accompanied by the attending physician at the birth. It is therefore not absolutely necessary to switch to the attending gynaecologist.
This means for you:
- If you wish, you will be accompanied by a trusted doctor from your antenatal clinic
- The birth takes place safely in our clinic, with midwives, operating theatre and paediatric intensive care unit (neonatology)
- If your baby is in such a hurry that your attending doctor cannot make it to the delivery room in time, our hospital's own specialists will take over together with our attending midwife team.
How to register for the birth with an attending doctor
- Select an attending physician - Take a look at our attending physicians and their practices and decide on an attending physician of your choice.
- Make an appointment - Call the practice and make an appointment - ideally between the 20th and 25th week of pregnancy. Vie
- At the appointment - your attending doctor will talk to you about the progress of your pregnancy so far, perform an ultrasound scan and discuss all questions relating to the birth with you - from birth planning to the mode of birth (vaginal birth or caesarean section). There will also be room for anything that concerns you personally.
- Registration for the birth - Your attending doctor will take care of registration at our clinic after your appointment. You do not have to take care of this yourself.
- Continue as usual - the rest of your pregnancy care will continue to be provided by your gynaecologist - or, if you wish, directly by your attending physician.
- Delivery - Your attending physician will accompany you personally during the birth, together with our midwives.

Frequently asked questions about birth registration
When should I register for the birth?
You should register for the birth as early as possible, as clinics can only attend a limited number of births. An appointment between the 20th and 25th week of pregnancy is ideal.
What do I need for the birth registration?
You will need your maternity pass and your insurance card to register for the birth.
What does childbirth at the Dr Geisenhofer Women's Clinic cost?
The Dr Geisenhofer Women's Clinic is a private clinic - however, patients with statutory health insurance are very welcome. Single rooms and family rooms are generally not reimbursed by statutory health insurance companies and must be paid for by the patient. For detailed information on costs, please contact us directly.
Is an attending physician a chief physician?
No. An attending physician is a gynaecologist with her own practice and her own registered doctor's office - not an employed member of the clinic team. A head physician, on the other hand, is a senior employee of the clinic.
What is the difference between a midwife and an attending midwife?
An attending midwife works on a freelance basis - similar to an attending doctor - but accompanies her patients to the birth in a hospital. A full-time midwife is employed directly by the hospital. At our women's clinic, midwives accompany the births together with the medical team or attending physicians and support expectant mothers with their experience and confidence.
