Giving birth with an affiliated gynaecologist
What is an affiliated gynaecologist?
A locum doctor is a gynaecologist in private practice, who, although not employed by the hospital, does, however, cared for her own patients during childbirth. The Patients being treated by a consultant They support mothers throughout their pregnancy and are present in person at the birth – a trusted point of contact for any questions regarding antenatal care and childbirth. However, it is also possible to continue seeing your current gynaecologist throughout your pregnancy and only be attended by the affiliated doctor at the time of the birth. Switching to the affiliated doctor is therefore not strictly necessary.

- If you wish, you will be accompanied by a doctor you know
- The birth takes place safely in our clinic, with midwives, operating theatre and paediatric intensive care unit (NICU)
- If your baby is in such a hurry that your attending doctor cannot make it to the delivery room in time, our hospital's own specialists will take over together with our attending midwife team.

Frequently asked questions about registering a birth
When should I register for birth?
You should register for the birth as early as possible, as hospitals can only accommodate a limited number of births. Ideally, you should book an appointment between the 20th and 25th week of pregnancy.
What do I need for birth registration?
To register a birth, you will need your antenatal record and your health insurance card.
How much does giving birth at the Dr Geisenhofer Gynaecological Clinic cost?
The Dr Geisenhofer Gynaecological Clinic is a private clinic — however, patients with statutory health insurance are very welcome. Single rooms and family rooms are not usually reimbursed by statutory health insurance providers and must be paid for by the patient. For detailed information on costs, please contact us directly.
Is an affiliated doctor a senior consultant?
No. An affiliated doctor is a gynaecologist with their own practice and their own registration as a doctor with the statutory health insurance scheme — they are not a member of the hospital team employed by the hospital. A senior consultant, on the other hand, is a senior member of the hospital’s management.
What is the difference between a midwife and an affiliated midwife?
An affiliated midwife — much like an affiliated doctor — works on a self-employed basis, but supports her patients during childbirth in a hospital. A permanently employed midwife is employed directly by the hospital. In our maternity clinic, affiliated midwives support births alongside the medical team or affiliated doctor, providing expectant mothers with their expertise and reassurance.
